New Publication: “Exploring the Potential and Challenges of Lathyrus sativus (Grass Pea) in European Agri-Food Value Chains: A Cross-Country Analysis”

We’re excited to share a new publication emerging from the BioValue research project, focusing on the transformative role of underutilized crops—specifically Lathyrus sativus (grass pea)—in building more resilient, sustainable, and diverse agri-food systems in Europe.

As climate change continues to challenge conventional agricultural practices, crops like grass pea offer an opportunity to reimagine how and what we grow. This study explores the potential of Lathyrus through a multidisciplinary lens, combining literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, field observations, and consumer surveys with a regional focus on Germany and Spain.

Key findings highlight:

  • 🌿 Environmental resilience: Lathyrus thrives in both drought-prone and high-rainfall areas.
  • 🌱 Soil health: As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it supports sustainable crop rotations and reduces dependency on synthetic fertilizers.
  • 🍽️ Nutritional and culinary value: With appropriate processing, grass pea can offer enhanced nutrition and inspire innovative, culturally adaptable recipes.
  • 🤝 Value chain cooperation: Making the most of Lathyrus requires adaptive farming practices, collaboration across the food chain, and clear communication of its benefits to consumers.

This research underscores the importance of bringing underutilized species into the spotlight—not only as climate-smart crops but also as key players in reshaping Europe’s food future.
